RV Towing: Safety Checklist

Towing a recreational vehicle (RV) or towing something with an RV safely demands skills and proper equipment. It is challenging for a first-time driver to tow a vehicle as it involves technical knowledge. As a driver, make sure that you have the necessary towing skills and awareness about RV towing safety standards before heading on a journey. The following safety checklist will provide a brief introduction to the safety concerns that you should consider when planning to tow a vehicle with an RV:

1. Practice makes perfect

If you do not have a considerable towing experience, make sure you practice before hitting the road. Find a safe place where you can practice parking, braking, and steering in order to get familiar with trailer handling.

2. Inspect lights and tires

Inspecting all the major vehicle components such as lights, brakes, tires etc. is crucial. First, make sure the headlights, taillights, and signal lights of your vehicle and trailer are in good condition and working properly. Do not let a minor fault ruin your vacation. Second, check tires to see whether or not they are properly inflated.

3. Prepare yourself

A careful planning can save you time and money. Therefore, plan your trip and prepare yourself for unfriendly road situations. You can make a note of areas where driving can be challenging. Moreover, secure and tie down all the objects in the RV and trailer. Loose objects will start flying around every time you take a sharp turn.

4. Be aware of your surroundings

When you tow something with a vehicle, it takes a lot of space and you must be aware of this fact. While driving, you need space to take over and maneuver. It is important to observe your surroundings when parking. You have to be extra careful in bad weather. Do not park the RV at a point where objects can fall on it.

5. Right use of gears and brakes

Choosing the correct gear can be tricky when descending or ascending. It is recommended to use the lower gear while climbing up or down the hill. This will put less strain on the brakes. The excessive use of brakes will quickly overheat them.

6. Stay alert and well-equipped

You should have a first aid kit, a flashlight, toolkit, a fire extinguisher and other necessary equipment so that you can deal with emergency situations immediately. These are some of the basic RV towing safety tips and considerations. Consult a professional towing contractor to get more information.
