Tips For Driving in Bad Weather

Tips For Driving in Bad Weather

While you might think that driving in bad weather is a rare occurrence, it is, in fact, quite common. In case you ever find yourself driving in harsh weather, you should know how to practice safety.

The best course of action would be to postpone your drive/trip, but if this isn’t an option, then here are a few tips that might assist you in getting through.

Plan Accordingly

The first thing that you should do is take a look at the weather forecast. You should plan your trips according to the weather. The ideal thing to do would be to delay your trip when the weather is not clear. In case you can’t cancel or postpone it, carry a physical map with you so that you are aware of your whereabouts if you get lost due to low visibility.

Drive Carefully

You should make sure to drive as slow as possible while at the same time, following the posted speed limits. For example, if you are driving in a thunderstorm or a blizzard, it is recommended that you drive slowly because of low visibility. This also helps with the grip of your vehicle tires. If you drive fast, your tires can slip, which can cause your car to steer out of control. Driving slowly will reduce the risks of an accident.

Wear Seatbelts

Wearing a seatbelt should be a no brainer. You should always wear your belts even if you are driving in clear weather. This will protect you and the passengers in case of an accident. On top of that, wearing a seatbelt for drivers is a must in Alberta. You may be fined for not doing so.

Low Beam For Foggy Weather

Driving in foggy weather is more common than you think. Do not panic, though; you should always use your low beam lights to get more visibility. Using low beam lights has tons of advantages. Not only does it allow you to see more clearly, but this also assists other drivers to see your car quickly. While on the subject of foggy weather, it is even better if you stay on your side and do not steer left or right without any reasons. Plus, you should not drive your car recklessly.

Keep A Safe Distance From Other Cars

This is one of the most critical steps that you can take while driving in bad weather. While driving, always ensure that you have enough distance from the car in front of you. This is because if that car brakes, you will have ample time to react. It also helps in case your car slips due to rainfall or snow. Always keep room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
